Frost damage to Natives At Silverwood, Hororata Winter 2012

2012 Winter was particularly severe – with a number of -8deg frosts.
Here’s a quick summary of the natives at Silverwood and their survival or otherwise.
The following relate to groups of 10 which were planted in Sept 2011.

As at 20 June 2012, in the kanukas planted Sep 2011 – they were v. small when planted – 5 remained alive, but hadn’t grown, 3 had frosted tops and two had grown a little bit. Late October 5 dead and 4 showing signs of life and one ok.

Mountain wineberry (Acellia fruticosa) all alive, but not healthy – Oct 2012.

Olearia paniculata replaced in April the dead Coprosma areolata – and by June 5 were half alive and now only one half alive – the rest are dead.

Coprosma taylorii – four dead, one dubious and 5 ok.

C. rigida – lost two of the 10. In other words these are doing rather well.

Corokia bronze king – the 10 are looking healthy.

Replaced 2 of the Muehlenbeckia astonii in April 2012 and need to replace three more. They were very small plants.
